The best, maybe anywhere!

I am from Knoxville and have been eating at La Paz or Chez Guevara since 1985. I have also lived in Dallas, Atlanta, Las Vegas and Chicago and in addition have traveled all over the world for pleasure and business and I can honestly say that La Paz is my favorite 'Mexican' restaurant in the world!!! I recommend everything but especially the Spinach Queso, both Salsa's and an old school item no longer on the menu but they will still make it for you, called Mase Ramone. The Margarita's are world class and the atmosphere is fun and completely relaxing. Enjoy often!

Best Mexican in town -

It's hard to find, but well worth it. One of those word-of-mouth joints. Their margaritas and spinach queso are all I really need in life. But, the menu goes beyond what you normally get. Yes, you can get a beef burrito or a cheese quesadilla, but you can also get Black and Blue Nachos, King Crab Quesadillas, and my favorite, fish tacos with some of the spiciest sauces I can handle. Once you go, you'll understand. The staff are very helpful - we're regulars now, so they bring us a carafe of no-salt margs and the queso without asking!

Not too smoky, but, if you're asthmatic, you might bring an inhaler, followed by a tequila chaser.

It gets pretty busy on weekends - I like to go on a weeknight instead to avoid the wait and the crowds.

• Pros: the art on the walls keeps moving around - I think they have gnomes that change it
• Cons: I wish I had a bigger stomach or a hollow leg

More than just mexican food!

If you're expecting a Speedy Gonzalez or #13 combination then you're gonna be pleasantly surprised. In my continuing quest for the "best of" every type of cuisine known I would have to say that Chez Guevara is my all time favorite in the Mexican category. I have been eating here regularly for twenty years and still love it as much as when I first tried it. The menu is much more sophisticated than what you'll find at a typical Mexican restaurant, after all this is not a typical Mexican restaurant at all. I would describe it as upscale Southwestern, Central and South American fare made with the freshest ingredients and served in a casual, hip atmosphere. The price is moderate and well in line w/ the value. If you're in or around Knoxville and enjoy this type of food then it's a must!

• Cons: All smoking but typically not too smoky
